Hi this is Jillian, a rising high school freshman, from AHG Troop IL1317. AHG is perfect for girls ages 5-18. Troop Leaders help you towards becoming a woman of integrity, and you participate in leadership roles that will help you in the future.
My AHG Troop has helped me learn about my faith and different prayers I haven’t heard before. I have been working on the AHG Catholic Faith Award, God & My Community, with a girl from my Level and our Troop Coordinator. I learn so many things that can help me and my journeys as I grow up, as well as different organizations that I can serve in.
My mom and our Troop Coordinator helped me to follow deadlines and find ways on how I can finish a badge requirement. My favorite badge so far is Rock Climbing because I was able to learn different ways on how to rock climb and I was able to spot and learn how to keep other people safe.
We don’t only work on badges but we also get to have fun! We have different events Troop families can attend such as a Christmas Around the World event, where you can dress up wearing a Christmas outfit or a traditional outfit form your chosen country. You can also serve some traditional food as well. I represented the Philippines and served Taho, a popular Filipino street food made with soft silken tofu, sweet syrup (usually brown sugar syrup), and tapioca pearls (sago).
We recently participated in a Memorial Day event, where the girls held the flag and experienced the 21-gun salute, during the ceremony. We met Veterans who served in many different wars; some in the army and some in the navy! Afterward, we ate delicious food provided by various groups: Culver’s vanilla and chocolate ice cream and other groups served hotdogs, soda, and chicken and samosas.
In June, our Troop went on a camping trip for 3 days at Pratt Woods Forest Preserve. Girls were able to catch some fish for their fishing badge, enjoyed s’mores and went on hikes and explored!
Some of the girls recently went to an annual week-long AHG Summer Camp in Decatur, IL where they earned badges such as horsemanship, shooting sports, rock climbing and many more! They had a lot of fun during their free time swimming, making bracelets or just relaxing!
AHG has taught me a lot of things like being on time, working on responsibilities and finding ways to finish badge requirements whenever I miss a meeting. If you have girls in your family who are interested or have further questions, please send an email to Mrs. Sarah Schorsch at [email protected]. Thank you for taking time to read my article.
